I have a Kenmore 90 series dryer that has a burner not a coil. It tumbles but has not heat. How do I check the burner?

I have seen electrical issues that cause problems outside of your dryer. Regardless, when it comes to electrical issues you should call in a professional.
A standard light switch should be on a 110v line and the dryer should be on separate 220v – 240v line.
Be careful and get a electrician to see if the correct voltage is getting to your dryer. If it is then the issue is just with the dryer.

when i switch my dryer on, first the light in the utility room blinks off and back on. could that have anything to do w/ why it won’t heat? cause i just got it and tested it first before i got it home and it did get hot.

Actually if the coil is broken, there will be no current at all leaving the meter flat.

Borrowed a multimeter from my mechanic. Checked all the components in line and determined it to be the 10 year old heating element. Went to the local parts store. $62 later, it’s working. Thanks so much for the great videos. It was even easier than you showed. The only problem is now my wife thinks I should repair these for a living. LOL!!!

I think the meter goes up when there is NO resistance, not when it encounters resistance.
But other than that, excellent, excellent instructions.

So, both fuses are good? the dryer does not rotate or give off heat?
Could be the timer… Could be the motor but these are just guesses.
You might be able to get a free repair estimate, then you can determine if you want to do it yourself or get another dryer.

Really appreciated having this video available. It really helped to hear and see that it was something pretty basic, and how to test the bad part and be certain before paying for the part. I think your video and being able to follow it saved me at least a $100 bucks !!!! I’m now a new subscriber for in the future when something else breaks, and it appears to be major but probably isn’t.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I suspected my heating element was bad and your video showed me how to test it (it was bad). You sure helped me out, thank you very much!!

We fixed it!! Thank you so much for posting your instructions on how to change the heating coil for this dryer. We weren’t ready to buy a new dryer since we were actually waiting for our washer to die to purchase a new set.
Repairmen quotes were $150-$200 and for $60 (coil cost at Sears) my husband followed your video instructions and now we have our dryer back to normal.

Ah, now I am not certain but it could be a loose belt or the motor is on it’s way out.
Sounds like time to look into at least a used dryer, check your yellow pages for a used appliance store often you can get a good product and it will save you money.

Kevin

A more energy efficient dryer might be a good upgrade, even a used one with a year warranty would be something to consider.
Just check for used appliance store in the yellow pages and good luck.

thanks for the reply. i took the top off my dryer to check the belt, looked great. I was lookin at the schematics under the controls. At this point i rotated the drum, plugged it in and it worked great. than i put a load of wet clothes in and i have the same issue, not sure what i should do now, thanks

I take it you tested your heating coil and it was broken? I assume you checked your fuses and they were ok?
If so, perhaps purchasing a used dryer with a warranty might be the right choice should be able to get something worth while.
Something around $200 would be a fair price.

Kevin

I was sure this was the prob, but I replaced the coil and still no heat! Darn it! I was so proud of myself (single mom on a fixed income and all); now what? Thermostat? Where is it? Shoot, shoot, shoot…

Sorry, I have no video on that topic.

I purchased this dryer 8 years ago. Do you think it’s worth repairing or should I just replace it?
Would you know the actual cost of the heating coil?
A repairman quoted $150 to come out and replace the coil.

do you have a video showing where the fuse or thermostat is? and how to test them?
thanks.

I forgot to mention it could just be a fuse too!
All the best,
Kevin
