Achingly bittersweet, is right. A masterful work by a master in his maturity as he reflects. Sure, the vocals are a bit off in this take, but we well know what he usually delivers (and is always capable of). Much to say about the harmonic structure of this tune, too: the minor chord occurs during the last repetition of “the girls in their summer clothes,” which brings out the ache to the max. And on and on, but I won’t belabor the point.

He definitely has mentioned his admiration for Brian Wilson before. Another group that was known for upbeat tunes with bittersweet/depressing lyrics was the Gin Blossoms, especially on their first album.

I agree.
A lot of Bruce’s songs have sad lyrics but an upbeat tune…one of the reasons he is sometimes (famously) misunderstood. The reason the song is uplifting is because of the lines:
‘Love’s a fool’s dance,
I aint got much much sense
but I’ve still got my feet’
ie. There is still hope that love will lift you up out of the everyday.

I WAS AT THE MPLS ST PAUL CONCERT LAST NITE…IT WAS JUST LIKE THIS. when bruce started playing this song i got tears in my eyes. i was truly in LOVE.

Its interesting how some people think this song as so up beat cause even though it has a pop sound the lyrics almost sound mournful as even though its made in the sound of the beach boys all the girls ultimatley pass him by
